There's NO plastic in this scrubby and it was harvested from an urban backyard in New Orleans!

Each sponge comes with 4-5 seeds for you to skip the middle-women and grow your own!

These are best known as exfoliators in the bathtub, but they can also be used for dishes and anything that needs a little scrubbing.  They soften as they get used and when worn out, just toss them into a compost pile or even in your garden as they are entirely organic.

100% compostable fiber so you can simply bury your loofah in your garden or compost it.  Loofah will decompose within 30 days. Comes package-free.

About planting:  these are annuals and grow as vines, so pick out a spot that your loofah babies can hang on to.  Plant them in April and they will start making gourds by summer.  The green gourds can actually be eaten, but if you want just the sponge, wait until the gourd is turning yellow and is a little squishy.  You can also wait until the fruit completely dries and turns brown, but there's a risk that it rots in places and so is not very pretty.

About processing:  The longer you wait, the easier they are to peel, but we find that cutting a slice of the husk off with a knife works great.  Peel it, then spray water through the loofah to dislodge as much of the "meat" as possible.  Lay them out to dry, then tap all the seeds out!

Where does loofah come from?

Much of the loofah sold in the US is imported despite being easy to grow across the southern half of the continental United States.

Shipping loofah around the world comes at a big carbon cost, possibly negating the ecological benefits.

Rolling Refills buys loofah grown in New Orleans, so no carbon costs associated with shipping! Buying locally also keeps dollars in our community.

From California to Tennessee to South Carolina, there are people growing loofah, so if you are not in our delivery area, please check around for loofah grown close to you!
